Benalmadena offers to senior citizens the possibility to accede to university through the Senior Lecture Hall of the UNED. The Major of Benalmadena, Javier Carnero and the Rector of the University of Malaga, Adelaida de la Calle, signed an agreement for creation of this lecture hall. The classes will be given in free form in the Telematic Hall of the Ovoide building and they count with eight modules.
The Major of Benalmadena Javier Carnero, signed with the Rector of the University of Malaga (UMA), Adelaide de la Calle, an agreement for creation of Lecture Hall for older than 55 years as a part of the Open University of Benalmadena (UNED). In this act participated also the Councillor of Education, Elena Galan. “ This was the first visit of the Rector to our municipality. The creation of this lecture hall constitutes a new initiative in our municipality up to the moment and shows the interest of the Council of Education employed at this project from the beginning of the legislature and the immense collaboration given from UMA,” said the Major. “We consider that this initiative will benefit the quality of life of senior citizens. In this respect, we are grateful for all the facilities arranged from the UMA to carry out the initiative,” reported Carnero. The Major classified the first offer of eight courses as “varied and of great quality”. The Rector assured that it was the first time she visited the Town Hall. We consider this line of collaboration to be essential, because UMA is a University of the whole province and not only of the capital,” she indicated. For the rector this initiative fulfils pedagogic labour and social responsibility. It offers an opportunity to receive an university education to those who did not have the opportunity before and a series of social benefits, because the students also have the opportunity to make new friends and initiate a series of relations and social contacts.” Adelaida de la Calle pointed that this "will be the beginning of a collaboration that in the future will be wider and will crystallize soon in new educational initiatives. " The Councillor of Education explained the details of this project. The Senior Lecture Hall consists of a series of conferences given by university teachers in the centre of Permanent Training (Ovoide building) from January 13 to May 7, 2009,” she indicated. The period of matriculation will remain opened until the next December 10 in the Ovoid building. " We have already approximately 50 new students, a big success if we rely on the fact that it is a first year. All the modules are free, " the Councillor added. This first Senior Lecture Hall will have eight modules with four conferences each one: Criticism of Mass Communication and Intercultural Reality (from January 13 to January 22), Health (from January 27 to February 5), Great Teachers of Spanish Painting (from February 10 to February 19), Introduction to Archaeology (from February 24 to March 5), Imagining the World (from March 10 to March 19), Informed Consumption (from March 9 to March 11), The Province of Malaga, yesterday and today from the travel literature (from March 24 to April 23) and Art and Persuasion ( from April 28 to May 7). Both the Councillor and the Rector demonstrated the will of both institutions that the Senior Lecture Hall should have continuity in the next years.
