The Municipal Occupational Centre reopens its doors after the reform. The works had an investment of 500.00 euros and were supposed to repair the deteriorations caused in the structure of the building for the presence of an underground spring. The centre gives service to 53 users with intellectual disability by means of workshops and other pedagogic activities.
After several months of intense work, the Municipal Occupational Centre of Benalmadena reopened its doors this morning. This act was presided by the Major of Benalmadena, Javier Carnero and the Councillor of Education, Elena Galan. “ It was not an easy task, but from the first day the Government Team has put all his determination in order to arrange the building in the most urgent and satisfactory form,” said the Major during the reopening act. “This Corporation will always be concerned about the needs of the users of this centre, since we consider that a important labour is being developed in this aspect;” he indicated. Carnero emphasized the difficulty of the works, both for the character of the work and for the election of the company to develop it. Elena Galán pointed that a magnificent labour has been realized in the occupational centre,“ a model and an example to follow in the whole province, since we have users of all the province.” The Councillor emphasized the speed with which the deficiencies inherited from the previous legislature have been repaired. In case they had not been corrected, it might have given place to the closing of the centre. The works had a budget of approximately 500.00 euros, of which 100.00 euros corresponded to a subsidy from the Council of Equality and Social Welfare from the Regional Government of Andalusia. The works consisted on improvement of the foundations of the Occupational Centre, and the drainage for intersection of deep water and its later piping to a public network or cistern. Precisely the presence of this water originated this defects, but thanks to the drainage and piping we can use this water for the municipality,” said the Councillor. Galán pointed out the complex character of these works. The repair of the fissures that presents both the building and the pavement has constituted a complicated work because the facilities needed a complete evacuation. For this reason we have chosen to realize a temporary movement of the whole activity of the centre to a series of prefabricated modules. In whole 24 modules have been installed: workshops, offices, bathrooms and common zones. “ The change has not supposed a disorder for the pupils of the centre, because the modules were installed next to the day centre,” said the Councillor. The Director of the centre, Angel García, indicated that nowadays the centre have 53 users with intellectual disability. “In the centre we have diverse workshops and an area of personal adjustment where we try to increase the autonomy of our users.” Though the centre has been working in current facilities for 11 years, its activity began 23 years ago.
